Geoarchaeological Collection

The Geoarchaeological Collection is based on a donation from a US-American professor, Paul Goldberg (*1945), who collected sediment samples over decades. The collection contains more than 7000 objects, including thin sections, resin-bound sediment block samples, and sediment casts from archaeological strata and profiles. This makes the collection one of the largest of its kind in the world. The material comes from all inhabited continents and from almost all time periods. Complementing the archaeological objects, the collection contains a large number of recent sedimentary references.

Since many of the original sites and profiles no longer exist or can no longer be accessed, the collection represents an invaluable resource for the study of the human past and the evolution of our species.
