19. Mai 1971. „Die Umbenennungsfrage ist damit entschieden.“
July 2nd to November 7th 2021
May 19, 1971. 'The renaming question is thus decided.'
The theme of the exhibition called "May 19, 1971. 'The renaming question is thus decided.'" is 50 years of empirical cultural studies. On May 19, 1971, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs of Baden-Württemberg approved the renaming of the "Institute for German Antiquity, Folklore and Dialect Studies" to the "Ludwig Uhland Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies." The Tübingen institute was thus the forerunner of a development in the field of folklore - often associated with emotional debates - in the German-speaking world that continues to the present day.
With the new name, the "empirical cultural studies" intelectuals were drawn to it and transformed it into an innovative working science on a theoretical, methodological and subject-related level.
A look at the 1960s and 1970s thus illustrates how, in a short period of time, a nationally and internationally recognized and, especially for students, highly attractive institute emerged at the University of Tübingen. The broad concept of culture represented there, for example, has since determined not only academic perspectives, but also serves to clarify the question of how we see and understand ourselves and our world in everyday life.
The exhibition is part of the anniversary program "50 Years of Empirical Cultural Studies Tübingen". It was created in cooperation between the Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT and the Ludwig Uhland Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies and developed together with students.
On the occasion of the opening, a richly illustrated catalog will be published, documenting this exhibition together with the exhibition shown in the Haspelturm of the Ludwig-Uhland-Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies "Unser Ding. Sachgeschichte als Fachgeschichte" documenting the history of these 50 years from different perspectives.
