The "Collection Day Baden-Wuerttemberg" is the workshop series on scientific collections in Baden-Wuerttemberg by the working group "University Collections in Baden-Wuerttemberg".

In their dual roles as research infrastructure and science communicators, university collections form a group of their own with specific needs and challenges. With the establishment of the Museum of the University of Tübingen as a central institution, the University of Tübingen has created a progressive basis for a firm structural integration of scientific collections in research, teaching and public communication. However, many collection managers (and other people involved in collections) are still working alone to develop the immense scientific potential of the objects. Established in 2019, the workshop series provides a platform for networking and regular dialogue between people involved in the scientific collections and museums of the universities in Baden-Wuerttemberg. It aims to strengthen the core tasks of scientific collections and thus the research infrastructure in Baden-Wuerttemberg. To this end, collection managers from Freiburg, Furtwangen, Heidelberg, Hohenheim, Konstanz, Mannheim, Pforzheim, Reutlingen, Stuttgart, Tübingen and Ulm meet at collection conferences.

The Collection Day is open for collection managers and people involved with all scientific collections in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The aim is to organise two meetings per year. To ensure maximum accessibility, the duration of each meeting will be limited to one day and the programme times will take into account travel within Baden-Wuerttemberg. Attendance is free of charge.

Collection Day 2024/2

On October 11th, the fifth BW Collection Day BW took place for the first time in the Pfleghof in Tübingen's old town. The meeting focused on the development goals and development steps of scientific collections in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Discussions covered inreach and outreach processes, adaptive formatting for accessibility and communication, as well as concrete measures to make scientific collections (more) visible on an international level.

Collection Day 2024/1

On February 16th, the fourth Collection Day BW was held in the Ernst von Sieglin Auditorium at Hohentübingen Castle. The meeting focussed on the perspectives for scientific collections in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Forms of administrative integration at state level (i.e. through central custodies, central university institutions and administrative departments), digitisation and public relations, as well as increased efforts in collection and provenance research were discussed.

Collection Day 2023

On July 14th, the collection managers came together for the third Collection Day BW in the Ernst-von-Sieglin Auditorium at Hohentübingen Castle. In addition to the round table at the centre of the event, three participants presented examples of the development of their collections as a basis for discussion. The focus was on the development of networks and the visibility of collections within and outside university structures, as well as the struggle for structural integration into university teaching. The wish to organise bi-annual meetings was also expressed at this Collection Day.

Collection Day 2020

On July 27th, the second Collection Day BW took place in a shortened online format. The circumstances determined not only the format but also the programme of the meeting: The focus was on the specific challenges of dealing with collections and objects in university operations during the pandemic. Collection managers also discussed conceptual aspects of university collections, such as the relationship between collections, institutes and the university, and the creation of collection structures.

Collection Day 2019

On October 11th, the Museum of the University of Tübingen hosted the first Collection Day BW at Hohentübingen Castle. This first meeting of the working group University Collections in Baden-Wuerttemberg aimed to bring together representatives of the university museums and collections, familiarise them with the respective structures and discuss the challenges and possible solutions faced by the collection managers.
